Suliman V. Kamara
Suliman V. Kamara, Farm & Marketing Cooperative Coordinator, has over nine years of field experience in agricultural production and sustainable farming practices with the Ministry of Agriculture, Republic of Liberia. He served as senior agricultural extensionist, production manager and Regional Agricultural Coordinator. He worked with small-scale and subsistence farmers by providing training in sustainable farming practices including land identification and preparation, crop rotation, nursery management, field layout, transplanting, field maintaince, and post-harvest collection of data on field trials. He organized subsistence farmers into production groups and later most of them transitioned into Valuable Marketing Cooperatives. Mr. Kamara led small-scale farmers to research opportunities with the Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI) where they became active partners in conducting field trials and applying appropriate technology based on farmers' local conditions. Mr. Kamara taught crop production at the College of Agriculture, University of Liberia on a part- time basis for several years. He also worked at Catholic Relief Services, USCC, Liberian branch as Food Commodity Manager for five consecutive years. Mr. Kamara holds a Master of Science degree in tropical crop production from People's Friendship University in Moscow, Russia.
Suliman's major responsibilities for NESFP include organizing an immigrant farmer- driven marketing cooperative, researching appropriate markets and pricing for ethnic products, establishing market contacts, working with the farm site coordinator to develop post- harvest protocols and facilities and set up an aggregation and storage facility; monitoring produce quality standards; assisting with training on post-harvest handling and cooling techniques, coop financial management and bookkeeping, coordinating distribution; supervising deliveries; and coordinating production for markets.
