Justin is the twelfth generation on his family’s farm in Newburyport, Massachusetts. As a lifelong farmer, he brings a breadth of knowledge that his family has accumulated and passed down through the past 335 years. His tenure with New Entry began back in 2014 while mentoring our student farmers and providing technical assistance along their way.
Justin has spent a lifetime working alongside refugee farmers and hearing their stories of struggle and hope, perseverance and grit. In particular, their stories of escaping slaughter and genocide from the Khmer Rouge were particularly impactful and helped shape his life today.
He holds an undergraduate degree in conservation biology from Bradford College and an MBA from Bentley University, but it was his time as a grad student at Tufts’ Freidman School of Nutrition Science and Policy that turned him on to joining New Entry’s leadership team.
Justin’s favorite crops are those that epitomize the season in which they’re harvested: pea tendrils in spring; strawberries and rhubarb in early summer; stone fruit and tomatoes later on, and then pork and apples, leeks and squash in the fall. But beets are his favorite of all, because they’re loaded with sugar and they taste of the soil in which they’re grown more than any other root on Earth.
