“Food Safety and Understanding the Produce Safety Rule: How and why to work towards compliance.”

The new produce safety rule (PSR) is the first ever mandatory federal standard for growing, harvesting, and packing of fresh produce. While most farms averaging less than $500k in sales per year receive certain exemptions, all farms should follow best-practices to mitigate food safety risk. Sponsored by the eastern Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training (CRAFT), this free workshop will demonstrate standard operating procedures that show how small farms can work towards compliance, which will ultimately allow them to grow and access new markets. Attendees will build low-budget, compliant hand wash stations and tour New Entry Sustainable Farming Porject's incubator farms and Food Hub to see what partial PSR compliance looks like in action and discuss what your farm can do to be in compliance.

Topics covered will include: record keeping, health and hygiene, post-harvest handling and packing, soil amendments, staff training, and developing a food safety plan.
