Managing payroll is an essential part of running a successful farm business.This workshop is designed for farmers who want to gain confidence in setting up and managing their own payroll systems, and to better understand wage and labor laws.

Doug Sweeney, and Jeff Benton will lead participants through key tools and concepts that support better payroll management.

You’ll will learn:

  • How Jeff sets up and runs his payroll using spreadsheets
  • When it makes sense to run payroll yourself or use a payroll processor
  • Skills for navigating payroll law

Participants will leave with actionable strategies, a better understanding of wage and labor laws, and the confidence to manage payroll systems that support both their farm and their employees.

Presenters:

Doug Sweeney is a litigation attorney and partner in the Boston office of Holland & Knight, focusing on labor and employment law. He helps businesses understand and comply with employment laws, including employee contracts, wage and hour law, and workplace disputes. In this workshop, Doug will share practical guidance based on his real-world experience advising employers on tax, payroll, employment contracts, and related topics, with a focus on helping organizations stay compliant and avoid common mistakes.

Marie Donohue is Senior Business Solution Consultant with isolved. She will give an overview of what a farmer might consider when deciding about using a payroll service, and she will describe what it looks like to utilize isolved to help with payroll.

Jeff Benton is the founder and farmer at Orange Circle Farm, an organic CSA vegetable and flower farm serving Seacoast communities in Maine and New Hampshire. He runs a fully no-till operation, using a holistic approach to soil health. Jeff will share how he sets up and runs his payroll using spreadsheets.
