Harvesting Resilience: A Learning Circle on Season Extension, Growing Under Cover, and Climate-Resilient Farming
New Entry is facilitating farming learning circles with the aim of fostering mutual learning, and enhancing their climate resiliency practices. For the present engagement, Rijk and Maura extend an invitation to join them on a tour of their greenhouses, offering a sneak peek into what's thriving in March. Get ready to delve into the nitty-gritty of how they've secured funding for enhancing and expanding their infrastructure to facilitate year-round growth. Discover their journey into no-till practices in the high tunnels, learn about their experiences in cultivating within minimally heated spaces, and gain insights into the triumphs and hurdles they've faced in making this ambitious transformation a reality. It's a firsthand look at a farming success story, complete with lessons learned and strategies perfected. There will be ample time for Q&A and sharing your own experiences!
About the farmers facilitating the learning circles:
RIJK GUPTA. Rijk studied horticulture at UMASS Amherst with a focus in fruit and vegetable production and later mycology in graduate school at UW LaCrosse. He has been passionate about growing the highest quality foods for people who care about it. Working through the years in various avenues of horticulture, from nursery work to public gardening, Rijk has gained vast knowledge and experience to grow an eclectic selection of ornamental, annual and perennial plants.
MAURA DESFOSSES. Maura graduated from Providence College with a degree in Business Management. She began her career at an investment firm in Boston and gained invaluable business experience over the past 18 years. Maura’s knowledge and experience have given her the skills to help oversee the business side of the farm. Maura is also passionate about growing high quality, organic foods for the surrounding community and is excited to partner with Rijk on their forever farm.
About Anything Grows
In 2021, Rijk and Maura took the plunge into their forever farm by acquiring a fully operational farm and plant nursery, The Herb Farmacy. Since then, he's been on a journey of innovation, particularly in season extension and protected cultivation. Rijk's impressive setup includes three nursery greenhouses equipped with high-efficiency modines, two minimally heated high tunnels, and two unheated high tunnels. And the excitement doesn't stop there – he's got two more high tunnels on the way!
Rijk and Maura have embraced year-round farming in their establishment. They've introduced an 8-week winter Tulip CSA, ventured into cultivating shoulder-season flowers and veggies, grown warm weather crops like ginger and turmeric, all the while fortifying their farm's resilience to climate variations.
