About the Presenters

Steven Pilis. Steve currently serves as a Program Manager with Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources’ Agricultural Food Safety Division and has been with MDAR for close to 8 years. Upon joining MDAR, Steve took on “Swiss Army Knife-like” role conducting inspections, audits, technical assistance, outreach, and every other various task with the Produce Safety Program. As the Program has grown, he has taken on more of a programmatic role, ensuring all inspectors and farms are equally prepared for the growing season. He also serves as a presenter for the Produce Safety Alliance Grower Training. Prior to MDAR, Steve completed his Bachelor’s Degree at Suffolk University and Master’s in Public Administration from Northeastern University.

Leah Jurman. Leah oversees the farming operations at New Entry, coordinating support for farmers and managing 15 acres of incubator training farms in Beverly, MA. She leads field-based workshops and provides hands-on guidance in many aspects of farming, including food safety. With prior experience as Agriculture Team Coordinator for The Trustees, Assistant Farm Manager at Appleton Farms, and Assistant Grower on several Massachusetts farms, Leah brings a wealth of expertise. She holds a B.S. in Biology and Global Studies from Emmanuel College.
