2023 Summer Internship Description – Data Analysis and Visualization

New Entry Sustainable Farming Project (www.nesfp.org) is offering a full-time summer internship position to support survey development, data analysis, and information dissemination to support various grant and national FIELD Network projects.

Program Summary:  New Entry Sustainable Farming Project (New Entry) improves our local and regional food systems by training the next generation of farmers to produce food that is sustainable, nutritious, and culturally-appropriate and making this food accessible to individuals regardless of age, mobility, ethnicity, or socio-economic status.  In doing this work, we provide critical training, career development, and economic opportunity to new farmers.

Duties and Responsibilities:   New Entry is seeking for a Data Analysis Intern to assist in a variety of activities to survey, analyze, and disseminate data related to New Entry and the organization’s work. Primary responsibilities will support data collection, analysis, and outreach related to a several grant-funded projects on farm labor, mentorship, soil health, and other projects. Additionally, the position will support development and distribution of a national FIELD Network survey and creation of resulting infographics for publication on New Entry’s website.  Other responsibilities include supporting production and distribution needs for the New Entry farm and Food Hub. The role will be based at New Entry’s Beverly location on Moraine Farm.  Responsibilities will include:

Intern Learning Objectives and Outcomes:
- Support research on farm labor models, analyze survey data, and combine/contribute findings to a final report to be distributed regionally and nationally
- Support meeting logistics for farmer focus groups related to soil health and various topics and code, analyze, and write up findings from focus group data into report and infographics
- Support focus group and survey development for a farm mentor training program and contribute to project reporting
- Support development of a national survey, facilitate outreach, data collection, analysis of results and development of infographics to share publicly
- Work with Farmer Training Team to develop pre- and post-evaluation metrics related to farmer outcomes, results, and behavior change
- Support outreach efforts to regional farmers and dissemination of project results through press releases, newsletters, social media
- Support Farmer Training and Food Hub teams with field work and produce distribution efforts.

Desired Qualifications:
• Strong research, data analysis, organizational skills, and acute attention to detail
• Experience designing surveys and analyzing results and translating findings into Plain Language for a variety of audiences (Qualtrics experience or a willingness to learn preferred)
• Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
• Comfortable working independently as well as with a team
• Experience creating infographics and other data visualization methods preferred
• Experience with outreach, social media, e-newsletters and marketing preferred
• Demonstrated interest in engaging in issues of equity, inclusion and dismantling racism, particularly in regards to food systems
• Experience with standard computer software (MS Office, Qualtrics, Social Media, Salesforce CRM, website content development, graphic design, Excel database)
• Self-motivated and directed; ability to work well within a rapidly-changing environment
• Access to reliable private transportation at least 1 day per week (Monday) to our farm location in Beverly MA required
• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
• Ability to perform varied and repetitive warehouse tasks including manual lifting of boxes between 25 – 50 pounds, in conditions that vary from hot and humid, to cold and wet, and up and down stairs

Hours and Compensation:
This internship is available as an unpaid (for credit) or a paid (stipend) position  - $5250.  Internship period will begin May 22rd through August 18th, with an average of 35 hours per week for 12 weeks (with 1-2 weeks for vacation). Part-time positions may be considered.  The position will also be required to support food hub and farm field work on Mondays at Moraine Farm throughout the summer.
